Cheap Light #1: Forty Dollar Lamp
When I first took on this challenge (from former teacher and good friend Murray Mcmillan) I had no idea that having such a constrained budget would result in such tremendous design. In some ways, I still marvel at the randomness of trying to produce an exciting and innovative light with only $40. But I suppose this is why I like hanging out with artists. This pillar of fire by night descended into my mind one evening and, in a fit of maniacal zaniness, I designed and fabricated this guy in under six hours.

The fixture itself is over 12' tall and features (like basically all of my work) materials easily obtainable from your local Home Depot. The exterior was constructed with staples, ripped 2x4’s and linen drop cloths. The lamp is a halogen safety lamp, purchased from Home Depot.
