DEAN'S BRUNER'S SPEECH & ORIENTATION
Here's What I Remember - Besides The Burgers & Beer

"Diversity, Diversity, Diversity" Dean Bruner gave a very nice, positive spin to this (seriously predictable) topic, and managed to convince a few people that there really are good reasons to learn in an environment where most of the people around you are different. Bravo Dean Bob!

"I learned this while doing 'serious academic research' in Vegas. *cue laughter. Above a roulette wheel I read the following message - 'You must be present to win' and so also it is with your Darden education. If your comfort zone, familiarity with other cultures, and awareness of your own weaknesses doesn't grow during the next two years - you have not been truly present."

"This program is hard, and we are 100% unapologetic for this, because we believe this is one of the key reasons why employers continue to pick Darden as one of their top places to hire new employees. If you are nervous, you should be, but remember: tomorrow isn't your first day at school, it's your first day on the job of placing yourself in a position of influence where you can make the world a better place" Dean Bruner always finds a way of hooking in his belief that becoming successful is not about you. Ultimately, he (and I of course) believe that B-School is a place where folks go to be trained in the skills of world-betterment." Everyone in the room seemed excited and nodded along approvingly. I, for one, drank the Kool-Aid, put on the Rose-Tinted glasses and walked out the door with a smile on my face.

God knows that if only truly knew what I was getting myself into, I'd cry myself to sleep tonight... but instead I'm still smiling - and dreaming of my first day in class...

On Wednesday!
