MY PROGRAM JUMPS TO 4TH GLOBAL Forbes Magazine Moved Darden From 8th to 4th Yesterday, upon entering class, I overheard many students talking about "rankings" but I didn't find that particularly noteworthy. After all, people that are attracted to an MBA program are, in general, fascinated by numbers, and what is a ranking but a number that represents how respectable your program is?
Well, it turns out that there was something noteworthy going on after all. An email had been sent out (I got it later) that basically said Forbes was about to release their new B-School rankings and Darden was moving up significantly from 8 to 4. It also said to keep quiet about it for a while, but since there are links all over the web here for example, or read this for a slightly more official source...
Anyway, the big question of course, is does this matter at all? I am inclined to believe that the rankings simply follow the commonly held beliefs (is this true knowledge?) that anyone can get a hold of. For this reason then, it seems like the rankings aren't themselves important... but, on the other hand they do bring a sort of "sacramental" reality to the visceral world of the thought life of corporate America(and perhaps rest of world as well?)
In either case, the truth on the ground is that this place is crackling with energy and optimism. Students are of a very high calibre, the work ethic is high, the play ethic is high too (worth noting), and in general, it seems like we here at Darden have the inexplicable confident attitude of an organization that knows something about Business School that most other folks are missing.
It's the people stupid.
Everyone here wears a smile. Folks dress well, actively participate in class, and go out of their way to be nice. Exhibit A: I have been asked out to dinner three time (in one week) with other incoming Darden couples, and I am not the exception...
Regardless of how everyone feels in a few weeks, months, I am happy right now to believe the feeling in my gut that I have "come home" some how to the community I have always been a part of - but just hadn't ever spent much time with.
It's exciting. Posted August 17, 2007 Neighbor formerly Posted by: James Congrats on becoming a member of such an esteemed group, hurry and graduate so you can hire me. I'd work for you. Flashback of your dad busting a wooden spoon across your butt HaHa.
