MY LIFE IN RICHMOND Or at least a few thoughts about a great, strange town Over the past few months no question has been more interesting for me to answer than the following:
"So how do you like living in Richmond?"
I'm not quite sure what people expect me to say, but I tend to lead with the usual "oh, it's very nice, thanks for asking", and then follow immediately with a very specific example of something cool I experienced in the past week. To help you imagine what this exchange might look like, I've devised the following simple game. I'll pretend you just asked me the question (above) and then paint a picture of my life in Richmond.
Q: So how do you like living in River City?
A: Well, thanks for asking, Megan and I have actually really enjoyed exploring some of the lesser-known aspects of Richmond lately. For example, this past weekend we went to a local coffee roaster, bought artisan whipped honey and vanilla bean-thyme apple butter at a farmers market. After that we were feeling crazy so we just started walking around a local neighborhood (Careytown) in search of something exciting, and ended up stumbling upon a little bakery (Montana Gold) that actually mills and bakes their preservative-free bread every day. All in all, a great day.
Other days have been equally lucky, but they are never equal. A few weeks ago Megan and I hiked around near the James River and stumbled upon the wonderful elevated railroad tracks in the image at the top of this post. It's really amazing to discover such an underrated place so close to Washington D.C., but that's part of what makes this place so interesting.
